CADASIL (health) and Dura-Europus (sh)

CADASIL (health)

Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts and Leukoencephalopathy. An inherited form of vascular dementia that strikes relatively young adults of both sexes and is characterized by multiple strokes, dementia, migraine-like headaches, and psychiatric disturbances. CADASIL is due to mutation of a gene called NOTCH3 located on chromosome 19. Also called hereditary multi-infarct dementia.

Dura-Europus (sh)

Ancient town on the Euphrates River, Syria.

Originally a Babylonian town, it was rebuilt as a military colony งใ 300 BC under the Seleucid dynasty. Annexed by the Romans in AD 165, it became a frontier fortress. Shortly after 256 it was overrun and destroyed by the Sasanian dynasty. Its ruins give an unusually detailed picture of everyday life there and provide information about the fusion of Hellenistic and Semitic culture.
