A. adjective. = APOCRYPHAL adjective 1, 2. LME-L17.
B. noun. (Usu. treated as sing.; rarely as pl., with sing. -phon .) A writing or statement of doubtful authorship or authenticity; spec. (a) those Old Testament books included in the Septuagint and Vulgate which are not included in the Hebrew Scriptures, and which were excluded from the Protestant canon at the Reformation; (b) New Testament Apocrypha, various early Christian writings parallel to but excluded from the New Testament canon.
