Either of two Icelandic books, (a) the Elder Edda or Poetic Edda, a collection, made c 1200, of ancient Old Norse poems on mythical and traditional subjects; (b) the Younger Edda or Prose Edda, a miscellaneous handbook to Old Norse poetry, written c 1230.
