Medieval Music. The note E in the 7th hexachord of Guido d'Arezzo (c 990-1050), where it was sung to the syllable la, the highest note in Guido's scale; fig. as a type of something high or extravagant. Cf. ALAMIRE, ARE noun1 BEFA, CEFAUT, ELAMI, etc.
