[Male forename (Hebrew yose lit. 'may he (God) increase'), esp. of various biblical characters, spec. one of the twelve sons of Jacob and of the husband of Mary the mother of Jesus.]
In plant-names: (a) Joseph's flower (now dial.), yellow goat's-beard, Tragopogon pratensis, so called in allus. to the bearded figure of St Joseph in art; (b) Joseph and Mary (dial.), lungwort, either native, Pulmonaria longifolia, or of gardens, P. officinalis, so called from the flowers being pink and blue at different stages.
