Biochemistry. A cyclic sequence of enzyme-catalysed metabolic reactions which occur in mitochondria as part of aerobic cell respiration, in which oxaloacetic acid is acetylated, oxidized, and ultimately regenerated by a series of reactions in which ADP is converted to the energy-rich ATP. Also called tricarboxylic acid cycle.
