Designating days of the beginning of the week preceding the start of Lent, when it was formerly customary to be shriven and to take part in festivities.
Shrove Monday (now rare or obsolete) the Monday before Shrove Tuesday. Shrove Sunday Quinquagesima. Shrovetide the period comprising Quinquagesima and the following Monday and Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday; also called pancake day.
