[Latin from Greek akakia shittah tree.]
Any of numerous freq. thorny leguminous trees and shrubs constituting the genus Acacia, found esp. in arid regions of Australia and tropical Africa, with small flowers in spikes or globular clusters. Formerly also (Medicine), the congealed juice of unripe seed-pods of the Egyptian acacia, A. nilotica, formerly used as an astringent. Also, a substitute for this made from the juice of green sloes. More fully false acacia. A robinia tree; spec. Robinia pseudoacacia, native to N. America and grown in Britain for its scented white flowers. M17.
