A staff or stick used as a weapon; a cudgel, a club. obsolete in gen. sense. E16.
b. In pl. One of the four suits (represented by cudgels or batons) in packs of playing-cards in Italy, Spain, and Spanish-speaking countries, and in some tarot packs. Cf. CLUB noun 4. M19.
c. spec. A police constable's truncheon, esp. a relatively long one. L19.
A staff etc. carried as a symbol of office, esp. that of a field marshal. L16.
