A forest tree of the genus Fagus, having thin, smooth bark and glossy oval leaves, and bearing nuts; esp. the European F. sylvatica. Also (usu. with specifying word), any of various similar trees, esp. (in the southern hemisphere) of the genus Nothofagus. Also beech tree. OE.
