A unit of heat or energy; spec. (a) the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree centigrade (also called kilocalorie, large calorie, great calorie), freq. used as a measure of the energy value of foods (abbreviation Cal); (b) the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree centigrade, equal to approximately 4.19 joule (also called small calorie, abbreviation cal).
