[Late Latin centauria, -ea, ult. from Greek kentauros CENTAUR: the plant's medicinal properties were said to have been discovered by the centaur Chiron.]
A plant of the genus Centaurium, of the gentian family, usu. with pink flowers; esp. Centaurium erythraea (more fully common centaury). Also (with specifying word), any of several plants of allied genera. LME.
