A monetary unit equal to one-hundredth of an escudo in Portugal (until the introduction of the euro in 2002) and the Cape Verde Islands, of a peso in Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, etc., of a sucre in Equador, of a colon in El Salvador, of a metical in Mozambique, and (formerly) of a cruzeiro in Brazil.
