A large horse-drawn carriage; esp. (a) a State carriage; (b) (chiefly Hist.) a privately owned carriage for personal use; (c) Hist. a large closed carriage for public conveyance of passengers. M16.
hackney coach, stagecoach, etc. drive a coach and horses through, drive a coach and six through, etc., fig. render (legislation etc.) useless. sociable coach: see SOCIABLE adjective.
b. A railway passenger or mail carriage; esp. (US) one not provided with beds or berths. M19.
