[Old & mod. French componction from ecclesiastical Latin compunctio(n-), from Latin compunct- pa. ppl stem of compungere prick sharply, sting, formed as COM- + pungere prick: see -ION.]
Pricking or stinging of the conscience or the heart; uneasiness of mind after wrongdoing; remorse. ME.
