[Anglo-Norman dim. of Old French crue from Old Saxon kruka (Dutch kruik) = Old English cruce, Middle High German kruche (German Krauche) rel. to CROCK noun1.]
Ecclesiastical. A small vessel to hold wine or water for use in the celebration of the Eucharist etc. ME.
Formerly, any small bottle or vial for liquids. Now spec. a small stoppered glass bottle etc. for vinegar, oil, etc., for the table; (in extended use) a caster for holding salt, pepper, etc. (usu. in pl., such casters with or without a vinegar bottle etc.); also, (in full cruet-stand) a stand for cruets.
