A. noun. Chemistry. A salt or ester of hydrocyanic acid, containing the group CN or the ion CN (in Organic Chemistry = NITRILE); such a salt as the type of a powerful poison; the sodium, calcium, or other salt used in the extraction of gold, silver, or other metals from their ores. E19.

Treat (ores of gold, silver, etc.) with cyanide solution in order to form a soluble complex with the metal, as part of an extraction process. L19.
Case-harden (steel etc.) by immersion in a molten cyanide. E20.
