[Latin from Greek orux lit. 'stonemason's pickaxe' from its pointed horns.]
Orig., a N. African antelope of uncertain identity. Now, any large antelope of the genus Oryx, occurring in arid regions of Africa and Arabia, having long straight (or slightly curved) pointed horns in both sexes, and including the gemsbok, O. gazella, O. leucoryx (more fully Arabian oryx), and O. dammah (more fully scimitar oryx).
