[Old & mod. French (mod. datte) from Latin dactylus from Greek daktulos finger, toe, date (see DACTYL); so called from the finger-like leaf-shape.]
The fruit of the date-palm (see below), an oblong one-seeded drupe with sweet pulp, growing in clusters. ME.
b. More fully soppy date. A foolish, comic, or sentimental person. colloq. E20.
More fully date-palm. A palm tree of the genus Phoenix; esp. P. dactylifera, source of most commercially-grown dates, native to northern Africa and western Asia. LME.
