[French epidote, from Greek epididonai give in addition, formed as EPI- + didonai give (with ref. to the great length of the crystals).]
Mineralogy. A basic silicate of calcium, aluminium, and iron that occurs as monoclinic usu. green crystals in many metamorphic rocks. Also, any of several rock-forming silicates of analogous composition.
