[Old & mod. French equinoxe or Latin aequinoctium (medieval Latin equinoxium), formed as EQUI- + noct-, nox night.]
Either of the two occasions in the year when the day is the same length as the night throughout the world, as the sun crosses the celestial equator. LME.
