Orig., a painful swelling, pustule, or blister, esp. in a horse (cf. wind gall s.v. WIND noun1). Later, a sore produced by rubbing or chafing. OE.
P. V. White The old horse..with girth galls, and saddle sores.
A bare or barren spot in a field, coppice, etc. ME.
b. A place rubbed bare; an unsound spot, a fault or flaw. Now only techn. M16.
fig. A person who or thing which irritates, vexes, or harasses. L15.
