Any of various stocky feather-footed birds of the gallinaceous family Tetraonidae, of which several are valued as game-birds; esp. in Britain (more fully red grouse), a moorland game-bird conspecific with the willow grouse, Lagopus lagopus, but lacking white plumage in winter. E16.
