Chiefly Architecture. A spiral ornament, a volute; spec. each of the eight smaller volutes under the abacus of a Corinthian capital. M16.
An object of coiled form, either round an axis (like a corkscrew) or, less usually, in one plane (like a watchspring); Geometry a three-dimensional curve on a (notional) conical or cylindrical surface which becomes a straight line when the surface is unrolled into a plane. E17.
