[Dutch from Middle Dutch houtic, of uncertain origin.]
Either of two whitefish, valued in places for food, either (a) the rare anadromous form Coregonus oxyrhynchus, of Baltic coasts and rivers, or (b) the variable freshwater form Coregonus lavaretus, which occurs in lakes of northern Europe and Asia. Cf. GWYNIAD, LAVARET, POWAN, SKELLY noun 1.
