Orig. (now Classical History), a blue gem, perh. the sapphire. Now, the reddish-orange variety of zircon; also, a similar-coloured form of garnet or topaz. M16.
A flower whose dark markings were interpreted as the Greek word aiai, an exclamation of grief, and which was fabled to have sprung from the blood of Hyacinthus, a youth inadvertently killed by Apollo: variously identified with the martagon lily, a kind of iris, etc. Now Classical History or poet. (A flowering stem of) any of various bulbous plants of the genus Hyacinthus, of the lily family, with dense racemes of bell-shaped flowers; esp. H. orientalis, native to SW Asia, much grown for its fragrant flowers. Also, any of various related or similar plants. L16.
