A syndrome (formerly regarded as a disease peculiar to women) whose symptoms include shallow volatile emotions, overdramatic behaviour, susceptibility to suggestion, and amnesia, with physical symptoms such as anaesthesia, tremor, and convulsions that cannot be attributed to any physical pathology. CONVERSION hysteria. dissociative hysteria: in which the principal manifestation is psychological symptoms (rather than physical ones).
