[Latin imbibere, from in- IM-1 + bibere drink.]
Cause to absorb moisture or liquid; soak, imbue, or saturate with moisture; steep. LME-E19.
Of a thing: suck up, drink in, absorb (moisture). LME.

Take up, absorb, assimilate (gas, rays, heat, etc.). Also, take into solution or suspension. LME.
