I.
A thing that serves to give an indication or suggestion (of something else); an indication. M17.

b. A geological clue to the presence of gold. L19.
c. Ecology. A group or species of plants or animals whose presence acts as a sign of particular environmental conditions. E20.

b. Philosophy. A word which is the only one usable as a means of reference to something. M20.

A device which indicates the condition of a machine etc.; a recording instrument attached to a piece of apparatus; a pointer, light, etc., which draws attention or gives warning. M19.
attrib.: Which? For most cookers,..the indicator light going out gave a satisfactory indication that the oven was nearly at its steady temperature.
b. A display board giving current information, e.g. for train or aircraft departures. E20.
c. A device (now usu. a flashing light) on a motor vehicle for indicating an intended change of direction. M20.
Something used in a scientific experiment to indicate some quality, change, etc.; esp. in Chemistry, a substance which may be used to indicate whether the concentration of some ion (esp. hydrogen) is above or below a particular value, usu. by a characteristic colour. M19.
