[Perh. from Old French linette linseed, from lin flax: see -ETTE, -ET1.]
The flax-plant. Now only Scot. LME.
Flax prepared for spinning. Also, the refuse of this, used as a combustible. Chiefly Scot. LME.
A soft material used esp. for dressing wounds, orig. made by ravelling or scraping linen cloth. Formerly also in pl., pieces of this material. LME.
b. Orig., a particle of fluff. Later, fluff. E17.
Netting for fishing nets. Now dial. & US. E17.
The material which forms the bulk of the fibres in the cotton boll (cf. LINTER), which is separated from the cotton seeds by ginning and which after processing is the ordinary cotton of commerce. L19.
