[Old French loigne eastern var. of longe (mod. = loin of veal) from Proto-Romance, from Latin lumbus loin.]
sing. & (usu.) in pl. The part or parts of a human being or quadruped situated on both sides of the vertebral column, between the ribs and the pelvis (biblical & arch. as the part of the body that should be covered by clothing or as the seat of physical strength and of reproductive power). Also, a joint of meat which includes the vertebrae of the loins.
