Any of various tropical trees and shrubs, chiefly of the mallow family, with a fibrous bast; esp. Hibiscus tiliaceus, widespread in the tropics, and (more fully blue mahoe) the W. Indian H. elatus, whose wood is shot with blue. Also, the wood or fibre of such a tree. Cf. PURAU.
