A measure of weight, chiefly for gold and silver, formerly used throughout western Europe and usu. equal to 8 ounces (226.8 grams). Now only, any of various similar foreign measures of weight. OE.
A monetary unit, orig. representing the value of a mark weight of pure silver, equal to thirteen shillings and fourpence in the (English and Scottish) currency of the day. obsolete exc. Hist. OE.
b. A Scottish coin of this value. obsolete exc. Hist. ME.
Any of various foreign monetary units (obsolete exc. Hist.). Now spec. the basic monetary unit of Germany until the introduction of the euro in 2002, equal to 100 pfennigs; (see also DEUTSCHMARK, OSTMARK). ME.
