The tree Mespilus germanica, of the rose family, grown for its fruit (also medlar tree). Also (with specifying word), any of several related trees. LME.
Japanese medlar: see Japanese adjective. Neapolitan medlar, oriental medlar the azarole, Crataegus azarolus.
The fruit of the medlar tree, like a small brown-skinned apple with a large cup-shaped 'eye' between the persistent calyx-lobes, which is eaten when half-rotten. LME.
