A support in or on which something is set or placed or to which something is fixed, esp. for the purpose of display; spec. (a) a margin surrounding a picture etc., a card or other backing to which a drawing etc. is fastened; (b) a glass slide to which an object is secured for viewing by microscope; (c) a setting for a gem; (d) a stamp-hinge or other device for the arrangement and display of stamps in an album etc.; (e) the frame or support of a fan made of pieces of wood, ivory, etc.; (f) Photography a fitting to support a camera lens, esp. one on a camera with interchangeable lenses.
