nicotinic acid, a white crystalline heterocyclic acid, (C5H4N)COOH, which is a vitamin of the B complex whose deficiency causes pellagra, is widely distributed (usu. as nicotinamide) in foods such as milk, wheat germ, and meat, and is formed by oxidation of nicotine and by synthesis in the body from tryptophan; 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid.
