pluralism noun. E19.
[from PLURAL adjective + -ISM, after PLURALIST.]
The system or practice of the holding by one person of two or more offices or positions, esp. ecclesiastical offices or benefices, at one time. E19.
Philosophy. A theory or system of thought recognizing more than one ultimate principle (cf. DUALISM 1, MONISM; opp. SINGULARISM). Also, the theory that the knowable world is made up of a plurality of interacting things. L19.
b. Psychology. The theory that behaviour is determined by a number of interacting causal factors. M20.
a. A theory advocating increased devolution and autonomy for individual bodies in preference to the development of monolithic State power. Also, the belief that power should be shared among a number of political parties. E20.
