[Old & mod. French quarte from Latin quarta use as noun of fem. (sc. pars part) of quartus fourth, ordinal of quattuor four.]
a. A unit of liquid capacity equal to a quarter of a gallon or two pints: in Britain equivalent to approx. 1.13 litres, in the US equal to approx. 0.94 litre. Also (US), a unit of dry capacity equal to approx. 1.10 litres. ME.
