A numbering; a number. rare. Only in LME.
a. A (marginal) reference to a passage of text. Cf. QUOTE verb 2. M16-L17.
b. Typography. A large (usu. hollow) quadrat for filling blanks in letterpress printing (orig. between marginal references). obsolete exc. Hist. L17.
A note or observation; a matter noted. E-M17.
a. A quoted passage or remark; transf. a short passage or tune taken from one piece of music and quoted in another; a visual image taken from one work of art and used in another. E17.
