A. noun.
a. Geometry. A plane figure contained by two radii and an arc of a circle, ellipse, or other curve which they intercept. L16.
b. A mathematical instrument consisting of two flat rules hinged together, sometimes attached to a graduated arc, and inscribed with various kinds of scales. L16.
c. Astronomy. A telescope turning about the centre of a graduated arc, used to measure large angular distances. E18.
gen. A body, figure, part of a mechanism, etc., having the shape of a geometrical sector; a division, a part; a unit. E18.
