Used in words adopted from Latin and in English words modelled on these in senses (a) designating, denoting, or involving a ratio of an integer to the next lower integer, as sesquialtera, sesquitertia, sesquiquarta (5:4 or 1 1 / 4:1), sesquioctave (9:8 or 1 1 / 8:1), etc., or occas. a similar integral ratio (no longer productive); (b) designating, denoting, or involving multiplication by one and a half, as sesquicentenary etc.; (c) Chemistry denoting combination in a compound of three equivalents of a named radical or element to two others, as sesquioxide etc.
