[Obscurely rel. to Dutch smient, smeente, Low German sment wigeon, German Schmeiente, Schmi-, Schmu- small wild duck (from Ente duck).]
A medium-sized Eurasian saw-billed duck, Mergus albellus, having grey and white plumage with the head red-brown and white, or in the breeding male, black and white. Also called white merganser.
