[Latin from Greek stakte fem. of staktos distilling in drops, from stazein to drip.]
Any of several fragrant spices referred to by ancient writers; spec. (a) the oil exuded from the myrrh tree; (b) in biblical translations, one of the prescribed ingredients of incense, variously identified as opobalsamum, myrrh, storax, or tragacanth.
