The appointment of a deputy or successor; deputation, delegation. LME-M18.
Law. The designation of a person to succeed as heir on the failure of a person previously named. L16.
The putting of one person or thing in place of another; the taking of another's place, the exchanging of places; replacement. (Foll. by for the person or thing replaced, by the replacing person or thing.) E17.
Math.
a. The replacement of one algebraic quantity by another of equal value but differently expressed. E18.
b. The operation of passing from a simple serial arrangement to any other permutation of n variables. E18.
Theology. The replacing of one sacrificial victim with another; esp. Christ's suffering of punishment vicariously for humankind. M19.
