Orig., the aromatic resin of the gumbo-limbo, Bursera simaruba (family Burseraceae), used for incense. In later use, any of various similar resins obtained from other W. Indian and S. American trees of the genus Bursera and the allied genus Protium, and from Indo-Malayan trees of the genus Calophyllum (family Guttiferae), etc., which were formerly used extensively in medicine.
