The action or an act of swelling; swollen condition. Now rare. LME.
a. Medicine & Biology. An abnormal swelling or enlargement in any part of the body of an animal or plant; an excrescence. Now usu. spec., a permanent swelling without inflammation, caused by excessive continued growth and proliferation of cells in a tissue, which may be either benign or malignant. LME.
brain tumour, Burkitt tumour, Pancoast's tumour, theca cell tumour, etc.
b. More widely, any part rising above or projecting beyond the general level or surface; a swelling. Now rare exc. as in sense 2a above. E17.
