Chemistry. A toxic colourless or yellowish oily liquid alkaloid which is the chief constituent of tobacco, acting as a stimulant in small doses, but in larger amounts blocking the action of autonomic nerve and skeletal muscle cells; -pyridyl--N-methylpyrrolidine, C10H14N2.
Comb.: nicotine patch an adhesive patch impregnated with nicotine which is worn on the skin and from which nicotine is absorbed gradually through the skin, thus reducing the wearer's craving for cigarettes.
