Any of various climbing leguminous shrubs constituting the genus Wisteria, native to N. America, Japan, and China, and bearing pinnate leaves and pendent racemes of showy blue-lilac papilionaceous flowers; esp. Wisteria sinensis (more fully Chinese wisteria) and W. floribunda (more fully Japanese wisteria), both much grown to cover walls. M19.
