A. noun.
Nautical. A short pin passed through a loop or the eye of a rope, a link of a chain, etc., to keep it in place, or for the attachment of a line. M18.
A crosspiece on the end of a line or chain, or fixed in a belt or strap for attaching a weapon etc. by a loop or ring. Now esp., a short rod-shaped piece secured to cloth and pushed through a loop and twisted so as to act as a fastener on a garment. L19.
b. A movable pivoted crosspiece serving as a barb in a harpoon. L19.
c. A toggle joint. E20.
d. A kind of wall fastener for use on open-backed plasterboarding etc., having a part that springs open or turns through 90 degrees after it is inserted, so as to prevent withdrawal. Also toggle-bolt. M20.
e. Electronics. = LATCH noun1 2b. Also toggle circuit. M20.
f. Computing. A key or command that is always operated in the same way but has opposite effects on successive occasions. Also toggle switch. L20.
