Any of several large S. American burrowing rodents of the chinchilla family: (a) (more fully mountain viscacha) each of three long-eared and long-tailed rodents of the genus Lagidium, found in mountains from Peru to Patagonia; (b) (more fully plains viscacha) a heavily built rodent, Lagostomus maximus, which has horizontal black and white bars across the face and is found in the grasslands of Argentina.
